| ARea2008: ESWC'08 Workshop on Advancing Reasoning on the Web: Scalability and Commonsense |
| |
Description |
Semantic Web Technologes provide concepts, architectures, and tools for
interconnected vocabularies and applications. One of the declared goals of Semantic Web research is to enable intelligent software agents to reason
about information and knowledge which is pervaded on the Web. To realise this, Semantic Web reasoning research has to face two apparently contraditory challenges: On the one hand, scalability to web size is crucial. On the other hand, expressive knowledge representation capabilities
are needed, as traditionally studied in the are of commonsense reasoning.
We therefore seek to bring together researchers interested in scalable
reasoning solutions for the Semantic Web as well as researchers in commonsense reasoning. |

| MODELS OF PREFERENCE CHANGE |
| |
Description |
Preference change is an important topic in political philosophy, economics, psychology and decision theory. It poses a major problem for action explanation, since without the understanding of how long preferences remain stable, or of how they change after a certain period, any preference explanation is open to ad hoc modifications. It further poses a problem for normative purposes, since without an understanding of how preferences remain stable or how they change, the normative relevance of present preferences for future consequences cannot be determined.
Despite this obvious importance of preference change, we find that it is treated more as a phantom than as a phenomenon: it is often mentioned to motivate theoretical arguments, but it is hardly ever the subject of systematic research itself. In this workshop, we hope to begin mending this theoretical deficit. We will convene experts from philosophy, economics and psychology to debate and compare the different approaches that have been made in modelling preference change. In particular, we want to facilitate an interdisciplinary exchange, where philosophical theories of rational decision, economic techniques of modelling behaviour and psychological empirical research inform each other – while maintaining a clear focus on the philosophical issues of these different approaches, and the way they interpret the empirical evidence. |

| Practical Cognitive Agents and Robots |
| |
Description |
International Symposium on Practical Cognitive Agents and Robots (PCAR 2006)
Mobile autonomous robots can perform complex tasks in unstructured and dynamic environments. Advances in autonomous mobile robotics over the last decade have been extraordinary, and the potential for future scientific breakthroughs and applications is breathtaking. However, a number of bottlenecks to future advancement have been identified such as building robots that know what they are doing, and that can adapt to changing conditions and requirements.
This symposium seeks to move the research frontier by focusing on the scientific bottlenecks, namely equipping robots with more knowledge about internal representations and the external world, as well as developing an awareness of oneself and others. |

| Understanding the Dynamics of Knowledge (UDK 2005) |
| |
Description |
This ESF Exploratory Workshop aims to explore various co-related features
of knowledge dynamics in human and artificial agents, including evolution
of concepts, cognitive development and learning, and short-term dynamics
such as belief change and information update. Both individual and social
dynamics of knowledge will be explored, and their interplay analyzed.
Formal and computational models will be compared with socio-cognitive
theories of knowledge change, and with empirical findings in psychology,
anthropology, and social sciences.

| BR & Dynamic Logic |
| |
Description |
In 'standard' AGM belief revision, a deductively closed theory T is revised with a formula phi, resulting in a revised theory T * phi. Typically, the negation of phi is in T and has to be 'retracted'. A fairly recent way to model belief revision is within more general theories of action and change such as dynamic logic, as sketched first in 'Two traditions in the logic of belief: bringing them together', by Segerberg (1996, and 1999). In this setting a pointed Kripke model for belief in the theory T satisfies in particular B ~phi, and a dynamic modal operator [* phi], for 'belief revision with phi', is interpreted as an epistemic state transformer [[* phi]]. In the resulting epistemic state then holds B phi. There are also other general frameworks, that have been investigated recently in AI, such as situation calculus and fluent calculus. Such dynamic (and generally
epistemic) approaches allow in a natural fashion for multi-agent belief revision, for belief revision with epistemic beliefs (typically: of other agents), and provide refreshing insights on irrevocable belief revision and iterated belief revision.

| Workshop on Grounding Sensory Information and Symbolic Knowledge (Grounding Sensor and Symbolic Information) |
| |
Description |
Grounding sensory and symbolic information in agents involves linking the internal representation of the world to real world objects. Grounding is an issue in all systems from insects to apes and beyond! Grounding is particularly challenging when designing complex artificial systems like software agents and mobile robots interacting with dynamic environments.
The purpose of the workshop is to bring together researchers who are interested in addressing fundamental research challenges related to the development of theoretically sound models and methods that can be used to build robust practical solutions to the grounding problem.
The Invited Speakers for the Workshop Grounding Sensory Information and Symbolic Knowledge include David Makinson of Kings College London and Bernhard Nebel of Freiburg University, Germany.

| RoboCup 2002 |
| |
Description |
RoboCup is an international research and education initiative. Its goal is to foster artificial intelligence and robotics research by providing a standard problem where a wide range of technologies can be examined and integrated. The concept of soccer-playing robots was first introduced in 1993. Following a two-year feasibility study, in August 1995, an announcement was made to introduce the first international conferences and soccer games. In July 1997, the first official conference and game was held in Nagoya, Japan. Followed by Paris, Stockholm, Melbourne and Seattle, the annual events attracted many participants. Following previous conferences and games, the 6th RoboCup will be held in Fukuoka, Japan in cooperation with Busan, Korea in June, 2002. This RoboCup will coincide with the"2002 World Cup Korea/Japan".Today, more than 3,000 researchers from 35 countries and regions are participating in various projects such as international games, conferences, research and educational programs.
The main focus of the RoboCup organization is competitive soccer. Games are important opportunities for researchers to exchange technical information. They also serve as a great chance to educate and entertain the public.
RoboCupSoccer is divided into the following leagues:
Simulation league
Small-size robot league (f-180)
Middle-size robot league (f-2000)
Four-legged robot league
Humanoid league

| First International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems AAMAS 2002 (Autonomous Agents 2002) |
| |
Description |
Agents (adaptive or intelligent agents and multi-agent systems) are one of the most prominent and attractive technologies in Computer Science at the beginning of the new century. Agent and MAS technologies, methods, and theories are currently contributing to many diverse domains such as information retrieval, user interface design, robotics, electronic commerce, computer mediated collaboration, computer games, education and training, smart environments, ubiquitous computers, social simulation, etc. They are not only a very promising technology, they are emerging as a new way of thinking, a conceptual paradigm for analyzing problems and for designing systems, for dealing with complexity, distribution and interactivity, and perhaps a new perspective on computing and intelligence. Yet to realize this promise further advances are required in agent architectures, languages, theories, and design techniques.

| Semantic Web Working Symposium |
| |
Description |
The Semantic Web is a vision: the idea of having data on the Web defined and linked in a way that it can be used by machines not just for display purposes, but for automation, integration and reuse of data across various applications. In order to make this vision a reality for the Web, supporting standards, technologies and policies must be designed to enable machines to make more sense of the Web, with the result of making the Web more useful for humans. Facilities and technologies to put machine-understandable data on the Web are rapidly becoming a high priority for many communities. For the Web to scale, programs must be able to share and process data even when these programs have been designed totally independently. The Web can reach its full potential only if it becomes a place where data can be shared and processed by automated tools as well as by people. |
